Getting started: the right order
When you start out, nothing is recorded yet. Here is how to build up your data in the right order.
Why the order matters
In NicerGolfJournal the data builds on itself. You can only record a round once there is at least one player and a fully set-up course. The app guides you: while data is still missing, it tells you what is needed next.
Step 1: Create players
Start with the players. Create at least yourself, with first and last name, a display name and your current handicap index. Optionally add a home club, country and an avatar.
No round can be recorded without an active player, which is why this comes first. See the chapter Players & groups for details.
Step 2: Prepare a course
A course consists of three building blocks that you create in this order:
- Hole set – the holes with par and stroke index (e.g. "Front 9", "Back 9").
- Layout – which hole sets are played in which order (e.g. an 18-hole round).
- Tee set – a tee (e.g. yellow, red) with course rating, slope and par per category.
Shortcut: import course data
You don't have to build a course yourself. This website offers ready-made course data to download and import directly into the app. See the chapter Getting & exchanging course data.
The chapter Understanding courses explains hole set, layout and tee set in detail.
Step 3: Record your first round
As soon as a player and a course with a layout and tee set exist, you can record a round: choose the date, format (stroke play or Stableford), 9 or 18 holes, the course, layout and tee – then enter strokes, putts, penalty strokes as well as GIR and FIR hole by hole. More in the chapter Recording rounds.
Step 4: Analyze
After your first recorded round, Analysis fills up. Its overview shows your most important figures, and the categories go into detail. The chapter Analysis: overview, statistics & handicap explains how to read the values.
